“Virtual image has produced a fine collection of interactive maths activities on CD that will motivate and enrich lessons at KS3 and KS4. The CDs are designed primarily for use in the classroom with an interactive whiteboard or a laptop connected to a projector. The complete collection covers a total of three CD's, each containing a wealth of mathematical material from across the curriculum. You will find plenty of opportunity to practice routine mental arithmetic in an imaginative and exciting way using activities such as 'match the target', 'spider diagrams' and 'the 24 puzzle'. I particularly enjoyed using 'mental arithmetic', a simple but effective activity designed to consolidate powers of mental computation. This exercise provides an admirable mental-oral warm-up activity as recommended by the KS3 National Strategy but can be used effectively at any point in the lesson. My pupils were highly motivated to compete constructively with each other and I could increase the difficulty of the task by reducing the time allowed or by using harder numbers. I think that these CD's provide an excellent resource that will add an additional dimension to my planning and save me time. They can be used in many areas and at all levels of KS3 and KS4. There are numerous activities that facilitate good practise of the National KS3 Strategy, alongside well-structured revision exercises involving skillful use of the calculator. The able pupil will enjoy tackling mathematical challenges such as finding a fraction equivalent to a half using each of the integers from 1 to 9 once. Some of the more challenging investigations will even be of use in Years 12 and 13. This 4 CD suite of programs is certainly a useful tool for facilitating a very interactive and productive maths lesson. It will definitely help pupils improve their mathematical thinking skills and it will provide teachers with a vast range of lesson materials at the click of a mouse.”

“A program which is suited to the potential of the whiteboard is Maths Lesson Starters from Virtual Image, a set of four CDs each containing 25 lesson starters. There are links to internet sites, puzzles and ideas which could be developed into investigations. The range of topics covered is comprehensive and I particularly liked the one that deals with different ways of proving Pythagoras' Theorem. With this huge collection of lesson starters for the whiteboard your lessons can get off to a great start.”
