Have you ever wondered about how the world is constructed? Physicists now think that they have found the answer. The Forces of Nature is a gripping account of the scientists who have revealed the hidden structure of the natural world. It is the story of the fundamental components of matter and the forces that bind them together; a tale that is woven around the symmetry at the heart of the universe and the mystery of how this symmetry is broken. The characters that we will meet along the way include a chemist who was addicted to the pleasures of laughing gas, and the inventor of the kaleidoscope, whose business sense didn’t match his scientific acumen. We will also be enchanted by the weird looming apparition of the Brocken spectre; a ghostly giant who offered vital inspiration to a leading researcher. Our guides will include a physicist who compared his power to transmute the elements to the fabled alchemist Hermes Trismegistus and an astronomer who was captivated by the beauty of a falling snowflake.
